Yes — small amounts of plain cooked sweet potato are safe. Never raw.
Verdict
Yes, with care
Portion · Frequency
Pea-sized cube of cooked flesh · Once or twice a week

Cooked · peeled · pea-sized · twice weekly
Sweet potato is one of the few starchy vegetables most experienced owners are comfortable feeding occasionally. Cooked, plain, pea-sized, peeled. Raw sweet potato is hard for a small mammal to break down and can cause real digestive trouble, so the cooked-only rule isn't optional.
Why
A pea-sized cube of cooked sweet potato delivers vitamin A, fiber, and a small amount of natural sugar. Vitamin A is one of the few vitamins where supplementation has actual research behind it for captive insectivores — though most quality cat kibbles already cover it adequately, so this is a small bonus rather than a corrective.
The trade-off is starch. Sweet potato is roughly 20% carbohydrate by weight, mostly starches that convert to sugar. At pea-sized portions once or twice a week this is fine. Daily would push them toward weight gain quickly.
How to actually serve it
Peel a small piece of sweet potato. Steam, boil, or microwave until soft enough to mash with a fork — usually 5–8 minutes for a small cube. Cool fully to room temperature. Cut to pea-sized. No butter, no salt, no cinnamon, no marshmallow, no maple syrup. Plain, soft, small, room temp.
Three rules, no exceptions
- Always cooked until soft, never raw
- Skin off — too tough and fibrous for an animal this size
- Plain — no butter, salt, cinnamon, or any seasoning
What it’s actually good for
Useful low-sugar-by-fruit-standards treat option. Most hedgehogs enjoy the soft texture and mild sweetness. Fiber content can help with stool consistency. The vitamin A is a small nutritional win.
What it’s not good for
Starchy. Easy to over-feed because hedgehogs visibly enjoy it and a tablespoon of mashed sweet potato seems like nothing to a human. At hedgehog scale that's far too much. The orange pigment can also stain fleece liners — minor but worth knowing.
Signs to watch for
Weight gain over weeks if you're feeding more than the pea-sized portion. Loose orange stool 6–24 hours after a treat is normal first-time gut adjustment; if it lasts longer than a day, skip sweet potato for a few weeks.

Common questions
Common questions
Can hedgehogs eat raw sweet potato?
No. Raw sweet potato is too hard for a small mammal to digest properly and can cause real intestinal upset. Always cook until soft enough to mash with a fork.
Can hedgehogs eat sweet potato skin?
Skip the skin. Even when cooked it's tough and fibrous, and tends to be where any pesticide residue concentrates. Peel before cooking.
What about regular potato?
Skip raw potato entirely (solanine, like green tomato). Plain cooked white potato is technically safe in pea-sized amounts but offers nothing nutritionally — sweet potato is the better choice if you're going to feed any potato.
Can hedgehogs eat baby food sweet potato?
Plain, no-additive baby food sweet potato is fine and often easier than cooking your own. Read the label — many brands add salt, sugar, or starches you don't want.
