Cucumber is one of the more boring vegetable treats and that's part of why we like it. Most hedgehogs eat it without becoming addicted, which means it's a useful rotation option that doesn't displace kibble interest. It's mostly water, which makes it useful in warm weather, and it's low enough in everything else that it doesn't really cause problems if you slightly overdo it.

Why

Cucumber is about 96% water and 4% everything else (mostly fiber, with trace amounts of vitamins K and C). There's nothing harmful in it, and there's nothing meaningfully nutritious either — it's a hydration source and a treat-rotation option, not a nutritional addition.

The skin is the only mild concern. Commercial cucumbers are often waxed or pesticide-sprayed; both are designed for human consumption (where you'd peel them) but neither has been studied for hedgehog ingestion. The simple solution: peel the cucumber, serve flesh only.

How to actually serve it

Wash the cucumber. Peel it (or use organic, unwaxed cucumber if you trust the source). Cut a thin slice from the middle, then cut a pea-sized piece from that slice. Serve at room temperature.

Three rules, no exceptions

  • Peel commercial cucumbers — wax and pesticide residue isn't worth it
  • Pea-sized, room temperature
  • Skip pickles and any cucumber prepared with vinegar, salt, or seasoning

What it’s actually good for

Useful in warm weather. If your hedgehog seems sluggish in summer heat or you live somewhere temperatures climb, a small piece of cucumber adds water intake without the sugar load of fruit. Not a substitute for clean water in a bowl, but a useful supplement.

Signs to watch for

Cucumber is one of the lower-risk treats for digestive upset. Standard rules apply — loose stool more than 24 hours = vet call, refusing kibble next day = pull treats for a week.

Common questions

Common questions

Can hedgehogs eat cucumber skin?

Better not, unless you have organic, unwaxed cucumber from a trusted source. Commercial cucumbers are often waxed or pesticide-treated. Peel for safety.

Are pickles okay for hedgehogs?

No. Pickles have high salt content and added vinegar — both are problematic at hedgehog body weight. Stick to fresh, unprocessed cucumber.
