Plain cooked egg is one of the better treats you can offer a hedgehog. It's high protein (~12g per large egg), well-tolerated by most hedgehogs, and easy to portion. The catch: every common way humans prepare eggs is wrong for a hedgehog. Plain, unseasoned, fully cooked, pea-sized.

Why

Eggs provide complete protein with all essential amino acids — useful for hedgehogs, especially during recovery from illness or for underweight individuals. The cooked white is also useful for medication delivery (it's sticky enough to hide a crushed pill but not appealing enough to risk overconsumption).

Raw eggs are a different story. Raw egg whites contain avidin, which binds biotin and can cause deficiency over repeated exposure. Raw eggs also carry salmonella risk. Cooking solves both problems.

How to actually serve it

Crack one egg. Scramble plain in a non-stick pan with no oil, no butter, no salt, no seasoning. Cook fully — no runny center. Let it cool to room temperature, then cut a pea-sized piece. Or hard-boil an egg, cool, peel, and cut a pea-sized piece. Refrigerate the rest for human consumption (don't store separately for the hedgehog — fresh each time).

Three rules, no exceptions

  • Always fully cooked — never raw
  • No oil, no salt, no seasoning, no cheese, no milk added
  • Pea-sized portion only — eggs are nutrient-dense

What it’s actually good for

Useful for underweight or recovering hedgehogs. A vet may specifically recommend small amounts of cooked egg for a hedgehog that's lost weight or is recovering from illness. The high protein and complete amino acid profile help with rebuilding.

Useful for medication delivery. A pea-sized piece of scrambled egg can hide a crushed pill better than most foods. Most hedgehogs are enthusiastic enough about egg that they swallow before identifying the pill.

Signs to watch for

Watch for diarrhea after the first introduction — uncommon with egg but possible if too much is offered too quickly. Watch for the same kibble-refusal pattern as with mealworms if you offer egg too frequently.

Common questions

Common questions

Can hedgehogs eat raw eggs?

No. Raw egg whites contain avidin, which binds biotin and can cause deficiency. Raw eggs also carry salmonella risk. Always cook fully.

Are eggshells safe for hedgehogs?

Skip them. Some sources suggest crushed shells as a calcium supplement, but the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in a quality kibble + insect diet doesn't have a calcium gap that needs filling. Save the eggshells for the garden.

Can I use an egg to give medication?

Yes — a pea-sized piece of plain scrambled egg with a crushed pill mixed in is one of the more reliable medication-delivery methods. Confirm dosing with your vet first.
