Can Hedgehogs Eat Dog Food? (No)

No — dog food has the wrong protein-to-fat ratio and the kibble is usually too large.

Wrong profile and pellet size — use cat food

Dog food isn't toxic to hedgehogs, but it's a substantially worse choice than cat food and there's no situation where it's the right answer. Dogs are omnivores with completely different macronutrient needs than insectivores. Dog kibble is also formulated for animals roughly 10–50 times the size of a hedgehog, which means the pellet size is wrong and the nutrient density per kibble piece is calibrated for a much larger stomach.

Why

Adult dog food is typically 18–25% protein and 10–15% fat — well below the 30%+ protein an insectivore needs. The protein sources are also often more plant-based (corn, wheat, soy) than what a hedgehog's gut is built to extract amino acids from. Dog food is fortified with vitamins and minerals at concentrations sized for a dog's metabolism, not a hedgehog's, which means some micronutrients can be too low and others too high relative to need.

The pellet size is the practical issue most owners notice first. A standard adult dog kibble is the size of a marble or larger; hedgehogs can't chew it and either ignore it or end up with dental wear in the wrong places.

What it’s not good for

Wrong protein content (too low). Often wrong fat content (varies). Wrong micronutrient profile for insectivore needs. Wrong pellet size. There's no upside that justifies any of this when adult cat kibble is in the same store at the same price.

Signs to watch for

If you've been feeding dog food: weight loss or thin appearance over weeks (insufficient protein), poor coat quality, brittle quills. Switch to a quality adult cat kibble and these usually reverse within 4–8 weeks.

Common questions

Common questions

Will one kibble of dog food hurt my hedgehog?

No. A few accidental pieces won't cause harm. The problem is dog food as the staple, not as a one-off accident.

What about puppy food?

Higher protein than adult dog food, but still lower than what an adult hedgehog needs, and the kibble size is even more off. Cat food remains the right answer.

Can I mix dog food and cat food?

There's no benefit. Just feed adult cat food as the staple.
