Raspberries are fine for hedgehogs in small amounts. They're not toxic, they're high in fiber and vitamin C, and most hedgehogs visibly like them. The reason to keep portions small is the sugar content and the seeds — a whole raspberry is a lot for an animal under a pound, and the seeds tend to stick to their face and quills if you don't break the berry up.

Why

A raspberry is roughly 5% sugar by weight, about half what a watermelon is, but still meaningful at hedgehog scale. The vitamin C and antioxidants are nice but not necessary — a hedgehog on a complete kibble already has its vitamin needs covered. The fiber is a small bonus.

The practical issue with raspberries is that they break apart messily. Whole raspberries leave seeds embedded in fleece liners and stuck to quills. Mashing the half-berry lightly with a fork before serving solves both problems.

How to actually serve it

Wash the raspberry, cut it in half, lightly mash with a fork. Serve at room temperature in a small dish. The mash makes it easier for them to eat without rubbing seeds across their face. Once they're done, check for any flattened bits on the cage floor and remove before they get walked into.

Three rules, no exceptions

  • Half a fresh raspberry, never a whole one
  • Mash lightly so seeds don't stick to quills
  • Skip frozen-from-the-bag raspberries — too cold, too watery as they thaw

What it’s actually good for

Most hedgehogs enjoy raspberries, which makes them useful for bonding and for masking medication if your vet has prescribed something bitter. The fiber content is also higher than most fruit, which can help if their stool has been a bit loose.

What it’s not good for

Sugar content. A whole raspberry contains roughly 1 gram of sugar — at hedgehog scale that's the equivalent of a tablespoon for a human. Halve the berry, halve the sugar. The other downside is mess — raspberry pieces left in bedding for a day will mold quickly.

Signs to watch for

Loose stool 6–24 hours after the treat means too much sugar, too cold, or first-time gut adjustment. Cut back. Pink-tinged stool is normal after raspberries (it's the pigment, not blood) but should clear within a day. If it lasts longer or your hedgehog seems off, vet visit.

Common questions

Common questions

Are raspberry seeds dangerous?

Not toxic, but they're a nuisance. They get stuck between teeth, embedded in quills, and trodden into fleece liners. Mashing the berry lightly before serving keeps the seeds contained.

Can hedgehogs eat frozen raspberries?

Skip frozen. Cold fruit can upset a small mammal's stomach, and frozen raspberries get watery and mushy as they thaw. Fresh is worth the difference.

Are blackberries the same as raspberries?

Similar profile — fine in small amounts, mash to handle the seeds, half a berry per serving. Same once-a-week ceiling.
