Can Hedgehogs Eat Blueberries? (Yes, with care)
Yes — half a blueberry once or twice a week is one of the better fruit treats for hedgehogs.
Verdict
Yes, with care
Portion · Frequency
Half a blueberry · Once or twice a week

Half a berry · cut sides up · weekly
Blueberries are one of the few fruits we'd actually recommend offering. They're small enough to portion easily, they're high in antioxidants, and most hedgehogs go for them on the first try. But the rules of the rest of the diet still apply: half a berry, once or twice a week, no more.
Why
Blueberries pack vitamin C, vitamin K, and meaningful antioxidants (anthocyanins) into a small package. None of those nutrients are gaps a hedgehog can't fill from a quality kibble + insect diet, but they're fine to add.
The sugar content is moderate by fruit standards — about 10g per 100g of berries. A half-blueberry serving is well under a gram of sugar, which is appropriate for an animal that weighs 350–700g.
How to actually serve it
Cut every blueberry in half before offering. Whole berries are a choking hazard for an animal with a small mouth and short throat — yes, even small wild blueberries. Cultivated blueberries are the worst offender because they're often as wide as the hedgehog's mouth.
Serve at room temperature. Skip frozen berries — the cold can upset their stomach and the texture changes after thawing.
Three rules, no exceptions
- Cut every berry in half — whole blueberries are a choking hazard
- Room temperature only, never frozen
- Wash thoroughly to remove pesticide residue (organic preferred)
What it’s actually good for
Antioxidants and bonding. Of the foods most hedgehogs visibly enjoy, blueberries strike the best ratio of nutritional value to enthusiasm. They also stain — a blueberry-faced hedgehog is a sign you've successfully introduced a treat that's worth the regular handling time.
Signs to watch for
Blueberry juice can stain skin and fleece liners purple — looks alarming, isn't. The actual warning sign is the same as with any fruit: loose stool that lasts more than 24 hours, refusing kibble the next day, or any blood. Call a vet for the last one.

Common questions
Common questions
Can hedgehogs eat whole blueberries?
No — always cut them in half. Whole blueberries are a choking hazard, especially for the smaller cultivated variety.
Are frozen blueberries okay?
Skip them. Cold food can upset a hedgehog's stomach, and the thawed texture is mushy. If frozen is all you have, thaw them fully and bring to room temperature.
Why is my hedgehog's face purple?
Blueberry juice. It stains everything it touches — fleece liners, skin, your hands. It's harmless and washes off in a day or two.
