Cantaloupe is fine for hedgehogs in small amounts. It's about 90% water, which means it's hydrating but also means too much causes loose stool fast. Same rules as watermelon — soft orange flesh only, no rind, no seeds, pea-sized portion, once a week at most.

Why

A pea-sized piece of cantaloupe delivers vitamin A, vitamin C, and roughly 8% sugar by weight. The water content is high enough to be useful in warm weather but high enough to cause loose stool in a small mammal that isn't used to it. Start with half a pea-sized piece the first time and see how the next 24 hours go.

The rind of any melon is tough, fibrous, and indigestible at hedgehog size. The seeds are a choking hazard. The greenish flesh closest to the rind is harder than the soft orange center and most hedgehogs leave it.

How to actually serve it

Cut a wedge from a ripe cantaloupe. Discard rind and any green flesh. Scoop out all seeds. Cut a pea-sized cube from the soft orange center. Serve at room temperature. If you've never given it before, try half the standard portion the first time.

Three rules, no exceptions

  • Soft orange center flesh only — no rind, no seeds, no green parts near the rind
  • Pea-sized maximum
  • Room temperature, never cold from the fridge

What it’s actually good for

Hydration support in warm weather. Most hedgehogs enjoy the soft texture. Lower sugar than mango or banana. Useful as a treat that doesn't add as many calories.

What it’s not good for

High water content makes loose stool more likely than with denser fruits. Cantaloupe also goes off quickly once cut — leftovers older than 24 hours in the fridge tend to develop bacteria fast and shouldn't be served. The flesh near the seeds is sometimes mushy and ferments quickly in cage warmth.

Signs to watch for

Loose stool within 6–24 hours of the treat means too much water, too cold, or first-time gut adjustment. If it lasts more than a day, skip melon for a few weeks. Cantaloupe spoils fast — never serve a piece that's been sitting out for more than an hour or in the fridge for more than a day.

Common questions

Common questions

Are honeydew and other melons the same?

Similar profile — soft flesh only, no rind, no seeds, pea-sized, once a week. Honeydew is slightly higher in sugar than cantaloupe; watermelon is slightly lower. The rules are essentially identical.

Can hedgehogs eat cantaloupe seeds?

No. They're a choking hazard at hedgehog size and not digestible. Scoop out all seeds before serving.

What about cantaloupe rind?

No. The rind is too tough for hedgehogs to chew or digest. Cut a generous margin to ensure none of the rind or the green flesh near it ends up in the serving.
