What the law says in Nevada

Nevada takes a permissive approach to exotic pet ownership compared to neighboring California. African pygmy hedgehogs are not on the state's restricted-species list under NRS 574A (Exotic and Wild Animals). Washoe County (Reno area) classifies hedgehogs as Tier 1 — exempt from special permit requirements.

Local municipal codes in other counties (especially Clark County, which includes Las Vegas) should still be verified directly before purchase, but state law is clearly permissive.

Where to verify

Always verify the current legal status before purchasing a hedgehog. Laws change, and local municipal codes can add restrictions on top of state law.
