Why this site exists
We started MyHedgehogCare because we couldn’t find a hedgehog resource we actually trusted. The pet-store pages were selling. The forums were arguing. The vet pages were too short to be useful at 2am when something is wrong.
So we wrote down what we’d learned in eight years of owning hedgehogs, asked our exotic vet to check the medical bits, and posted it. The site grew from there.
How we make decisions
Our editorial standard is simple: does this article help an owner make a better decision than they would have without it? If the answer is no, we don’t publish it.
That means we acknowledge tradeoffs other pet sites won’t. It means we tell readers when a product isn’t worth buying. It means we recommend against getting a hedgehog if our piece convinces a reader they shouldn’t. We’d rather lose a reader than send them home with the wrong animal.
Editorial team
Editor. The site is run anonymously. The editor has owned hedgehogs since 2017. Most of what you read here is their work, with vet review for medical content.
Veterinary review. Health and illness articles are reviewed by a licensed exotic-animal veterinarian before publication. Reviewer name, credentials, and review date are disclosed at the top of each reviewed article.
Contributors. Long-time owners occasionally contribute guides on specific topics where they have direct experience (breeding, multi-pet households, traveling with a hedgehog). Contributors get a byline but identifying details are kept minimal.
How we’re funded
Affiliate links and small contextual sponsorships, both clearly disclosed. We do not accept payment for product reviews. We do not accept payment to adjust our coverage of any product, breeder, or veterinarian. See our affiliate disclosure for details.
What we won’t do
- Recommend a product we haven’t personally used or that owner consensus hasn’t verified
- Sugarcoat the difficulty of hedgehog ownership to keep readers engaged
- Republish other blogs’ content with a rewrite
- Use stock photos of hedgehogs in unnatural poses
- Run pop-ups, push notifications, or email gates
Corrections
We update articles when we learn we got something wrong, or when the evidence on a topic changes. Material updates are timestamped and noted at the top of the article. If you spot an error, email hello@myhedgehogcare.com with a link to the article and what’s wrong.
